Background: Oriandla was the last of her people. Hunters, collectors more like it, came to her home world and destroyed everyone she knew. Her whole family gone in the blink of an eye. Why was her world attacked? Simple, Their heterochronic eyes were valuable to other worlds. One reason being that, everyone had either one gold, or one silver eye. They even took several scalps. But Oriandla managed to hide away from them in a room behind the shelves of her family’s basement. A room she had made on her own where she could sit and read and write for hours without ever leaving her house. She heard the commotion outside and it was when she came out of her room and saw her family slaughtered, eyes missing and scalps ripped from their skulls did she try to run. She ran up the stairs and outside, only to see her whole town destroyed and buildings burning and smoke spiraling up from crumbled homes. She screamed as ashes fell around her like snow and she tried to run but tripped over her own family member. She could still hear commotion. Shooting and fighting and it was heading her way again. She grabbed what she could to defend herself, but she was barely strong enough to lift the staff with her petite frame, but she managed using the weight as leverage. She readied herself for the fight to come.
It came quicker than she thought and she was fighting with all her might. Blood and ash smudging her face and then once the last hunter was down. She Turned to see who had taken such a precision shot. It was boy, not much older than herself and she lost her footing as she turned. She was prepared to fight him till death to protect herself. But he managed to overpower her. She struggled beneath him and she tried to push against him as he laid his body against hers. He seemed to have one thing he wanted…Her…She clenched her eyes as tight as she could, thinking he was there for her eyes like the rest and she tried to stop him. It wasn’t until she opened her eyes after feeling him trying to rip her clothes away and she looked up directly at him. Her gold and green eyes looked at him with such fear, she didn’t have room for anger. When she looked at him, he looked back and stopped what he was doing and moved off of her. She lay there panting and then crying.
The boy then wrapped her in a blanket and took her with him. She cried for days, and the boy visited her in the medical wing every day and when she was released, he introduced himself and apologized for his behavior in his own way. It was then on that day that she has met her best friend. The one who would become, Colonel Ryou Kir Terek. But as he called her Oria, she returned the favor and often called him, Terk. This would have him consistently correcting her until one day she just smirked at him, now letting her guard down a little and simply said, “I know.”
Before that, Oriandla was the third born of her family. Her brothers had a silver and a blue eye, but she..she was born with a golden eye. It was said amongst her people that those born with a golden eye were meant for greatness. She was the first in her family to be born so differently. There really weren’t as many people with golden eyes, and even less with green. Her grandmother said something was different and she would do great things…little did she know, she’d be the immediate assistant to the colonel eight years later. She missed her home and her people. But she was glad to have Ryou. She became very close with him and he close to her in return. She dyed her hair, hid her ears and wore contacts to fit in more with the humans, only with “Terk” as she called him, could she be herself. He got to see her eyes, and ears, and she got to see the warmer side to him that others didn’t through the stone face they wore daily. Only in their private time and times alone were they the most comfortable. At least she was.
She feared daily that the hunters would find her and take her eyes like all the rest of her people. She still had nightmares about that day. The home she once knew no longer existed. She was the only survivor of a planet turned war zone and destroyed. She missed her family and friends, but most of all, she missed being able to hide in her little room. The same little room that helped her survive all those years ago. Now, she had her quarters, but it wasn’t the same. So, she kept a journal. She wrote and drew in it every night until she’d fall asleep, then she’d hide it before going to work and having breakfast. She walked beside Ryou every day, and because he took her and helped her and became her friend, she pledged to herself to do her utmost to protect him. She was waiting for the right time to promise it to him, but every time she tried, someone called for them or something came up that had to be tended to. She was thankful she was alive, but at the same time, very lonely. She had Ryou, but something was missing….maybe she’d find it…someday…
